Govt blind to economic crisis : opposition

Reactions:
A financial crisis is looming over the country, threatening to rip into the real economy and affecting the lives of ordinary men and women, but government leaders seem to be in denial of the impending disaster, said several opposition members of parliament.

According to the DAP parliamentarians, instead of addressing the concerns of the people and coming up with concrete steps to stave off economic hardship, government leaders were more interested to jostle for political ground.

charles santiago“The last time such a disaster happened was ten years. This suggests that instability is systemic to the free market system, which has been used by corporations to benefit themselves,” said DAP MP for Klang Charles Santiago

“Ultimately, the socialisation of risks means it is the ordinary man and woman who will pay for their mistakes. Social policies will now be placed on the back-burners of government plans if they’re not completely taken off the national budget,” he added.

The latest financial crisis striking across the US and Europe - dubbed the worst financial meltdown since the Great Depression - has seen the former announcing an unprecedented bailout package of US700 billion dollars for the financial sector and European policymakers making similar, though smaller-scaled pacakages.

In Asia, India, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China have also put in place measures to deflect off the worst effects of the global financial crisis. Whilst in Singapore, the government has already declared a state of recession.

najib and ringgit and us dollarYet in Malaysia, Finance Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcob have recently issued reassurances the country was well buffered from the fast-spreading, incurring criticism from several quarters including Transparency International Malaysia.

Najib, who is also deputy prime minister, was reported to have said Malaysia’s economy was stable and several proactive measures would be announced soon to boost growth. He also said Malaysia enjoyed strong economic fundamentals, financial markets and infrastructure that would increase its resilience to any external shock.

“Such a response by Najib to the financial crisis - which will hit ordinary men and women in a very hard way - have not been helpful at all to assure us the government is dealing with the issues effectively, if at all,” Santiago said.

Possible Run On Banks

There is talk that as in other countries, retailers in Malaysia will be quickly decreasing orders in anticipation of the impending slump in demand, which will hit in turn hit major manufacturing exporters later this year.

There was also the possibility of a run on domestic banks, which are suffering from overseas investment losses. Tourist arrivals, commodity prices and manufacturing exports are also expected to be lower.

Santiago said the government was projecting a false picture of stability when Nor Mohamed recently said Malaysia’s diversified economy would save it from the global financial crisis. The second finance minister had said Malaysian exports accounted for only 30% of economic growth, a sizeable - and increasing - proportion of which went to China and India.

“Both India and China may import some our products in the form of product inputs, but they are also dependent on the US and European markets. If demands from the US and Europe markets reduce, then demands from India and China of our products will also decline,” said Santiago.

He also demanded that the government clarified how the 2009 Budget would be modified to reflect the sinking economic conditions.

tony puaAnother DAP leader, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua, said the global recession and lower oil prices would wreak “havoc” on the government's revenue and expenditure as project in the 2009 Budget.

“The more than 20% fall in crude oil prices will have a major impact on the Government's revenue... Without a any reduction in the government's planned record expenditure, this will mean a massive increase in the government's budget deficit to a precarious 5.4%, from its projected 3.6%,” said Pua in a statement.

Pua also called on Najib to table a revised budget in Parliament in light of the volatile economic circumstances.

“Najib must not only spew rhetoric about Malaysia's sound economic fundamentals and be in denial about the economic fallout which is about to hit us very hard, but instead take action and demonstrate his ability to soundly managing the country's financials to reassure investors and return the loss of confidence in Malaysia's economy.”

Perbualan tentang isu tu setakat disitu je... aku sambung kerja aku...

Lepas maghrib aku online balik, bukak google reader aku... dekat Malaysiakini aku terperasan satu tajuk best... Mufti Perak akui saran kerajaan PAS-UMNO.

Pemimpin tertinggi sertai rundingan PAS-Pakatan

Reactions:

Black Friday for Asian bourses, KLCI down 3.6 pct

Reactions:
Malaysian shares plunged nearly four percent on Friday, as huge overnight losses on Wall Street triggered a domino effect in Asia.

The losses in New York, worst than those seen in the immediate aftermath of the Sept 11 attacks, have persuaded investors the string of of multi-billion dollar bailouts plus concerted interest rate cuts will do little to keep a full-blown global recession from occuring

klse asia stock share market down crash turmoil 060307“Everybody is talking about keeping cash. Everybody wants to sell,” said the head of research at a large bank-backed brokerage.

“So what we have is a narrow, narrow door with everyone rushing out at the same time trying to dump as fast as they can. Who would dare come out to buy at this time.”

At market close, the benchmark Kuala Lumpur Composite Index was down 3.6 percent to 934.01 points.

In New York, the Dow Jones Index had plummetted 7.33 percent last night, while the broader-based S&P Index lost 7.62 percent. The tech-laced Nasdaq dropped 5.47 percent.

Today, the falls across Asia were so severe that the president of the Indonesian stock market once again halted trading, only this time he said the suspension was for an indefinite period “to prevent deeper panic”.

In Japan, the Nikkei plunged 9.6 percent, Hong Kong shares dived nearly 8 percent, while the Singapore Straits Times Index sanked 7.8 percent.

Vicious Circle

Later tonight, finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of Seven industrialized nations will meet in Washington to discuss a way out of the banking holocaust, which has been exacerbated by fear of counter-party risk amid a widening vicious cycle of bankruptcies..

“Very frankly, I am not so sure they can achieve much,” Lee Heng Guie, chief economist at CIMB Bank, told Malaysiakini. “They have already tried various ways but it hasn’t worked.”

“Still, the first thing to do is to try to find a way to restore confidence. What is happening is that the pessimism is down-spiralling. Noone wants to lend anyone any money. Everyone is afraid of incurring bad debts. Obviously, this is making everything worst.”

Lee suggested one possibility was that policymakers issued guarantees as this could halt the worldwide panic and re-generate investor confidence.

“It really is no point flushing the international money markets with liquidity as they have been doing in the past. What is the point if nobody dares to lend out the money especially to those who need the funds the most to recapitalise.”

Meanwhile, another factor weighing on the Malaysian market is the uncertain political situation as Umno - the largest party - gears up for the election of top office bearers.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi earlier this week had announced plans to step down next March, clearing the way for his deputy, Najib Abdul Razak, to move up the ladder.

Analysts have predicted the local market would continue to soften, unless there was a sharp reversal in the global trend. Some chartists believe the KL Composite may have to test the psychological 900 points before any reasonable technical rebound was possible.

“Investors would want to see what sort of economic reforms or plans that Abdullah’s successor would introduce before they return in any significant way,” said a dealer at a foreign securities house.

Meanwhile, market watchers are also keeping an eye on the 2009 Budget which is due to be debated on Monday when Parliament reconvenes.

Kenali "Datuk" Shah Rukh Khan - malaysiakini

Reactions:

Biography

Khan was born to Muslim parents of Pathan ethnicity in New Delhi, India.[1] His father, Taj Mohammed Khan was a freedom fighter from Peshawar, Pakistan. His mother Lateef Fatima was the adopted daughter of Major General Shah Nawaz Khan of the Janjua Rajput clan, who served as a General in the Indian National Army of Subash Chandra Bose.[2]

Khan's father came to New Delhi from Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar before the Partition of India,[3] while his mother's family came from Rawalpindi, also in present-day Pakistan.[4] Khan has an elder sister named Shehnaz.[5] He attended St. Columba's School where he was accomplished in sports, drama and academics. He won the Sword of Honour, an annual award bequeathed to the student who embodies most the spirit of the school. He later attended the Hansraj College (1985-1988) to earn an Honors degree in Economics. Though he studied for a Masters Degree in Mass Communications at Jamia Millia Islamia, he later opted out to make his career in Bollywood.[6]

After the death of his parents, Khan moved to Mumbai in 1991.[7] In that same year, before any of his film releases, he married Gauri Khan (who is a Hindu) in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony on 25 October 1991.[8] They have two children, son Aryan Khan (b. 1997) and daughter Suhana (b. 2000). According to Khan, while he strongly believes in Allah, he also values his wife's religion. At home, his children follow both religions, with the Qur'an being situated next to the Hindu gods.[9][10]

In 2005, Nasreen Munni Kabir produced a two-part documentary on Khan, titled The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan. Featuring his 2004 Temptations concert tour, the film contrasted Khan's inner world of family and daily life with the outer world of his work. The book Still Reading Khan, which details his family life, was released in 2006. Another book by Anupama Chopra, "King of Bollywood: Shahrukh Khan and the seductive world of Indian cinema", was released in 2007. This book described the world of Bollywood through Khan's life.

Khan's life-size wax statue is on display at the Madame Tussauds wax museum, London, installed in April 2007.[11] Khan has been accorded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) award by the French government for his “exceptional career”.[12]

Ex-cop: How AG interfered in 'black eye' case

Reactions:
A retired senior police officer who probed the infamous ‘black eye’ incident involving Anwar Ibrahim in 1998 has made startling claims on how attorney-general (AG) Abdul Gani Patail allegedly tampered with evidence in the case.

rahim noor 01In a set of court documents revealed this week, Mat Zain Ibrahim implied that the actions of Abdul Gani, then a senior deputy public prosecutor, delayed the investigation process and concealed facts from then AG, the late Mohtar Abdullah.

Malaysiakini contacted Abdul Gani’s office for comments today, but has yet to receive a response to the voice-mail message.

Mat Zain, who had led the investigation team, made his revelations in a 18-page statement of claim in a RM30 million defamation suit that he filed against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim on Aug 11, in the Shah Alam High Court. Mat Zain retired from the police force in 2001.

anwar ibrahim black eye 010805He claimed he had been defamed in Anwar’s police report lodged on July 1 implying that he had fabricated evidence relating to the ‘black eye’ incident (left), in cooperation with Abdul Gani and inspector-general of police (IGP) Musa Hassan (while a senior investigation officer in 1998).

In his statement of claim, Mat Zain pleaded innocence to Anwar’s claims and instead pointed the finger at Abdul Gani by recounting how the latter had allegedly interfered in the case.

Mat Zain’s claims were first made public on Wednesday, during Anwar’s sodomy trial in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court. Anwar’s lawyer Sulaiman Abdullah had read out the document in court during submissions on why Abdul Gani should not be involved in any aspect of the sodomy case.

However, the media was told not to report the details pending the court’s decision on the admissibility of the evidence. The gag order was lifted yesterday.

According to the document, Mat Zain was instructed on Sept 27, 1998 by then IGP Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor to head an investigation team, after Anwar lodged a report that day that he had been beaten up while in police custody, thereby sustaining injuries including a ‘black eye’.

Mat Zain said he had immediately instructed two forensic experts, Dr Halim Mansar and Dr Zahari Noor, from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital to examine Anwar.

Abdul Rahim met him privately that night and told him to conduct an in-depth investigation and “to leave no stone unturned” in order to uphold the image of the police force, he said in the document written in Bahasa Malaysia.

“I was ordered to only brief Rahim and (Mohtar) on the progress of the investigation and given the assurance that no other senior police officer will disrupt me in carrying out my duty.”

mahathir interview 050308A similar message was conveyed to Mat Zain in a meeting with then premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad (right) about two weeks later, to brief the latter on the progress of the investigation.

“During that meeting, I explained what actually happened to Anwar and identified the person who hurt him.

“The prime minister advised me that there should be no cover-up in the probe and stated that the government may set up an independent commission to investigate the case if there is any attempt to cover up the incident; (and if a commission had to be appointed) would tarnish not only the credibility of the police force but also mine,” the document added.

On Oct 16, 1998, Mat Zain said he met with Abdul Gani to hand over his first investigation report, after directed to liaise with him because Mokhtar was busy with official duties.

Gani's Role Explained

Abdul Gani’s alleged interference came into the picture when Mat Zain alleged in his court document that:

- A questionable medical report was prepared by one Dr Abdul Rahman Yusof, allegedly on Abdul Gani’s order.

lingam tape panel meeting 031007 abdul gani patailMat Zain stated that he found out there was an attempt to “insert irrelevant and suspicious statements” into the investigation report, especially in relation to “Abdul Rahman’s report which was done on the instructions of Abdul Gani” (right). Mat Zain said he was confident that Abdul Rahman has never examined Anwar physically.

- Mat Zain claimed he had obtained information that Abdul Gani was on the 30th floor of the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman when Anwar was assaulted and he believed Abdul Gani knew of the incident either at the time or soon after.

- On Oct 30, 1998, Mat Zain personally handed over his second investigation paper and report to Abdul Gani, and briefed him on the details. Among the conclusions were that the Anwar’s injury was consistent with assault and not self-inflicted; and that Abdul Rahim was the person who caused the injury.

- Although two investigation reports had been given to Abdul Gani on Oct 26 and 30 respectively, Mohtar was quoted in the media on Nov 7 as saying that his chambers had not received any such report.

- It was only on Nov 20 that Mohtar reportedly said he had received the report. Mat Zain said he believed Mohtar’s statement was made after he (Mat Zain) had “pressured” Abdul Gani a day earlier to confirm the status of his two reports.

- On Nov 25, Musa informed Mat Zain that Mohtar wanted to meet him (Mat Zain) at Bukit Aman and to visit the lock-up where Anwar was held. Musa and Abdul Gani were present during the visit.

- Mat Zain later found out that Abdul Rahman’s second medical report had mentioned there was a visit to the lock-up (where Anwar was held) and a “reconstruction of the incidence”, where Mat Zain was named as the person who had accompanied Abdul Rahman to the lock-up. Mat Zain denied this had ever taken place.

mohtar abdullah- On Jan 6, 1999, Mohtar (left) had reportedly said Mat Zain’s investigations were incomplete and that the latter had yet to identify the perpetrator (despite the findings given to Abdul Gani on Oct 30, 1998).

- Mat Zain said he “believed Abdul Gani concealed important facts from Mohtar’s knowledge” and had personally appointed Abdul Rahman as the medical officer to prepare the report in October 1998. His conclusion was based on the fact that Mohtar had only appointed Abdul Rahman two months later.

- Mat Zain said Abdul Rahman later testified before the royal commission on the ‘black eye’ incident in March 1999 and gave conflicting statements with regard to his own findings. The proceedings came to an end when Abdul Rahim admitted that he had caused the injury to Anwar.

At the end of his court document, Mat Zain vehemently denied Anwar’s accusation that he had plotted any fabrication of evidence with Abdul Gani and Musa.

“The truth is I had acted to the best of my abilities to prevent any party from influencing me to do anything unlawful while investigating Anwar’s injury,” Mat Zain said.

Musa filed a defamation suit against Anwar on July 21 while Abdul Gani has threatened to do the same.

5,000 MIC members left Samy to join PKR

Reactions:
Fed up with S Samy Vellu's authoritarian style, some 5,000 MIC members are set to close down their party branches and join PKR in Penang this Saturday.

Former Bayan Baru MIC division chairperson M Nganasegaran, who was sacked from the party yesterday, is expected to lead the exodus and officially handover their membership forms to PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim at the Bayan Baru PKR service centre.

Anwar and his wife, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are scheduled to be at the centre after hosting their Hari Raya open house in Cerok To’Kun, Bukit Mertajam in the morning.

With the exodus, MIC, in Bayan Baru as well as in the state, is set to be maimed politically as the division’s present 13 branches of 3,000 members would shrink to mere two branches with 200 members.

Besides MIC Bayan Baru, members from the nearby Bukit Bendera, Jelutong, Bukit Gelugor and Balik Pulau divisions are also expected to close down their branches and join forces with Nganasegaran.

MIC lost its political footing in Penang after both its candidates lost in the Bagan Dalam and Prai state seat contests in the March 8 general election.

The latest exodus would be a kind of revenge by the ex-Bayan Baru chairperson, who was sacked from MIC by its president Samy Vellu on Oct 8.

A copy of the letter which was couriered to Nganasegaran stated that he had been expelled from the party due to his involvement with opposition parties during the last general election.

'Judged By A Kangaroo Court'

Sources said Samy Vellu had particularly taken offence with the Bayan Baru division's endorsement of the Pakatan Rakyat state government’s joint anti-Internal Security Act conference on Sept 14.

samy vellu exclusive on tamil schools 080708 02The president had raised the issue at the party national central working committee meeting last week and called on party leaders to support a firm action against Nganasegaran.

The meeting then decided to refer the matter to the party disciplinary committee.

However, before the committee could decide on the issue, Samy Vellu apparently invoked the discretionary power vested in the president under Article 61.2 of the party constitution to expel Nganasegaran, who was once close to the former cabinet minister.

The sacked leader was given two weeks to appeal against the decision.

Nganasegaran, who has been the Bayan Baru division chief since 2003, slammed Samy Vellu's arbitral decision. "It's like a verdict from a hanging judge in a kangaroo court," he said.

He was not issued a show cause letter or suspended but suddenly found himself expelled 'out of the blue' from a party that he had loyally served for 18 years.

"Is this how Samy Vellu is going to re-brand and re-position MIC as a relevant political entity for Indians?" he asked.

"He can dream on," said Nganasegaran, who was once an influential political player in Penang MIC.

Plaza tol baru Jelapang pun dirempuh

Reactions:

Perjanjian Sulit Pak Lah Dan Najib

Reactions:
Aku cilok dekat MyKMU hangpa baca la sendiri...

Jangan dok biaq KERAjaan UMNO/BN dok lama-lama kat atas tu... kene kasik turun cepat-cepat. Pak Lah dah senget, ekonomi negara merudum sebab bagi orang senget jadik PM... kene kasik tukar kerajaan sebelum "menantu" pulak buat gila..!

Penguasaan Khairy bukan sahaja bersangkutan politik dalaman UMNO.

Don't Blame Me - KJ

Reactions:
PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin has denied that he is to blame for the early exit of his father-in-law Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as Prime Minister.

He said since the beginning of Abdullah’s premiership, the party leadership had been a “victim of constant and concerted demonisation.” This demonisation took on a very personal tone. It was directed at a few individuals.

“A lot of it was negative perception building. I think it was a deliberate strategy to undermine the leadership,” he said yesterday when met by reporters at the launch of the Institute for Advance Islamic Studies.

Over the years, there have been criticism and scathing attacks against Khairy by a number of people, including former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

They alleged that the Prime Minister was allowing his 32-year-old son-in-law to interfere in the running of the Government, which both Abdullah and Khairy have denied.

Khairy said Abdullah’s decision to leave office in March should be recognised as a sacrifice for party unity.

He added that a change in Umno and the country’s leadership would not reclaim lost support if there was no commitment to the reforms the Prime Minister had started.

“The reason we did not do well in the last election was not because of the leadership but because we did not fulfil the promises of 2004,” he said.

Khairy said Umno should not be under any misplaced illusion that it was a leadership issue.

Khairy, who is aspiring for the Youth chief post in the March party elections, said he hoped his father-in-law’s leaving office would not affect his chances in the contest.

In Alor Star, Jerlun MP Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir called on candidates vying for positions in Barisan Nasional component parties to stop bashing Umno.

“Umno candidates have been careful not to harp on sensitive subjects that could damage the relationship between the component parties,” he said.

“Likewise, candidates from other component parties should do the same. They should not fan sentiments to gain popularity within their own party at the expense of other component parties,” he said.

Hakim Batal Larangan Terhadap Media

Reactions:

Beliau berkata 10 tahun lepas, pendakwa membantah permohonan Anwar agar bahan bukti tertentu berkaitan Musa dilarang daripada disiarkan, tetapi kini, pendakwa sendiri memohon perintah larangan apabila ia membabitkan Abdul Gani.

Anwar hits out at Pak Lah

Reactions:
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hit out at the Prime Minister for apparently not carrying out the reforms he had promised in the last five years.

Referring to Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s initiatives for the next five months, the Opposition Leader said: “If he does it, well and good for the country. The first thing he should do is release all political prisoners.”

Speaking to reporters at the Jalan Duta court complex where his sodomy case was being heard, Anwar said a change in the Barisan Nasional leadership would not solve the problem faced by the nation today.

He said he did not see how Prime Minister-designate Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would be able to function effectively.

“It is not personal. The question is whether he can handle the economic crisis and the corruption and abuse of power in the Government which the Prime Minister has failed to tackle,” he said.

He said Najib was still in a “state of denial”, adding: “He is the only Finance Minister in the world who believes that the fundamentals of this country is still strong.”

He argued that Najib had never raised issues of reform for a free media, democratic process, pointing out also that he had not given any clue about how he planned to manage the country’s economy.

Anwar added that he would meet with “friends” to plan Pakatan Rakyat’s next move of action but declined to elaborate.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government and Penangites hoped that Abdullah would restore federal funding for projects in the state.

He said the DAP would co-operate with the Prime Minister in his final five months in office to restore the credibility of the judiciary, adopt stringent anti-corruption measures and eliminate abuse of power.

Aidiladha sasaran baru pakatan bentuk kerajaan?

Reactions:

KOTA BHARU: Tempoh dua bulan akan datang menjelang hari Raya Aidiladha kini menjadi sasran Pakatan Rakyat membentuk kerajaan baru Persekutuan?

Sasaran hari raya Korban pula dibayangkan oleh Ketua Umum Pakatan Rakyat, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim di sini semalam.

"Sasaran 16 September, ia masih landasan. Tak minggu ini, minggu depan. Jangan bimbang satu dua tahun berlaku."

Anwar diminta hadiri, kira-kira 12,000 sebab sasaran 16 September gagal dikotakan.

Apabila hadirin bersorak "jawab, jawab", Anwar memberitahu, sasaran 16 September memang menjadi, tetapi Perdana Menteri, Datuk seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi enggan menemui Pakatan Rakyat dan menolak permintaan sidang khas Parlimen pada 23 September lalu.

Anwar sekali lagi mendakwa mempunyai jumlah wakil rakyat yang mencukupi di samping mahu mengikut lunas Parlimen untuk menggantikan kerajaan Barisan Nasional.

Koh: BN can become single multiracial party

Reactions:

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon today urged Barisan Nasional parties to decide once and for all whether to turn the ruling coalition into a single multiracial party.

As it stands now, he said, all component party members can start turning their own parties multiracial by changing their names.

The “Malay” in Umno can become “Malaysian”, he said.

Similarly, MCA can become the Malaysian Citizens Alliance and MIC can be known as the Malaysian Integrated Congress.

The exodus begins as Kalimullah leaves NST

Reactions:
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — One of Malaysia’s most well-known and often controversial media bosses, Datuk Seri Kalimullah Hassan, the deputy chairman of the New Straits Times Press (NSTP), has tendered his resignation from the company.

Known to be close to Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, he becomes the first of a host of executives in Umno- and government-linked companies who are likely to be leaving in the next few months because of changes in Umno’s leadership.

The Edge Financial Daily
, quoting sources, reported today that Kalimullah had submitted his resignation to the NSTP board on Sept 3.

If accepted by the board, the resignation takes effect on Dec 31.

The newspaper said Kalimullah had expressed his desire to leave many times in the past, but it added that it was unclear if the resignation now is tied to Abdullah’s impending departure as Umno president.

Kalimullah joined NSTP in 2003 as its group editor-in-chief before relinquishing that post in 2006 to become deputy chairman.

During his tenure, he turned the New Straits Times from a broadsheet to a tabloid to try to arrest sliding sales.

But his tenure will be remembered more for the accusations levelled against him by critics of the Abdullah administration.

Former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad made Kalimullah a constant target of his attacks, claiming the newspaper had been used to silence him and other critics of Abdullah.

Other Umno leaders had also been upset with Kalimullah for a host of reasons, including the fact that he allowed the newspaper to break certain stories like the Royal Commission of Inquiry’s findings on the V.K. Lingam video, which some in government had hoped to suppress.

But ultimately, Kalimullah, like many of Abdullah’s close associates are being blamed for the ruling Barisan Nasional’s poor performance.

There remains a general consensus among many in Umno that the New Straits Times had not been used to promote Umno and BN adequately enough.

Besides Kalimullah, the NSTP had also recently announced the impending departure of its chief executive officer Datuk Syed Faisal Albar.

There are also likely to be changes within the next few months in other media companies linked to Umno like Media Prima, which operates all of the country’s free-to-air television channels.

With Datuk Seri Najib Razak looking like the front-runner to become the next Umno president, figures close to him are likely to be put in place in the Umno-linked media companies soon.

Gerakan’s tough choices

Reactions:
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — Ironically, it is only now when its political influence has been decimated that Gerakan has found itself in the spotlight.

It probably receives more media coverage now than when it actually governed Penang.

The reason is simple: its members want to leave the Barisan Nasional.

As the first component party to have its elections since March 8, it is in a position to set the tone.

President Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon is known to be the staunchest advocate of staying in the coalition but even he had to admit that 60 per cent of the grassroots want to leave.

And that’s a conservative figure as other sources quote 80 per cent as a likelier figure. While delegates to the national delegates conference are expected to make this issue of staying or leaving a priority, don’t expect any big news or surprises.

Koh has moved to delay the issue to a future emergency general meeting, insisting that the NDC should focus on internal party matters including what most agree to be make-or-break elections.

But even the elections are unlikely to throw up anything stunning as the only important contest is for deputy president.

It does not seem likely that delegates will back the former KL FT Youth chief Ma Woei Chyi, and will stick to the experienced vice-president Datuk Chang Ko Youn.

After all, it would be consistent with the traditional Penang-Perak formula to pick the Perak chairman.

With Koh returned unopposed, he is now in firm control of the party. Cheras division chief Dr Hsu Dar Ren, who will be running for a place in the central working committee, told The Malaysian Insider that in a debate with Koh, the party chief had said that BN must be given a timeframe to reform.

But the concern is “what exactly is the timeframe?” Every month that passes is one month less for Gerakan to start on its own reforms.

According to political analyst and Gerakan expert Khoo Kay Peng, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s announcement that he will be stepping down is the perfect tonic for Koh to keep Gerakan in BN.

“He cannot suppress the delegates from discussing the issue of leaving BN but the promise of an EGM means there is no need for a referendum on the matter at the NDC.

“Now he doesn’t have to call the EGM as he can ask to give Datuk Seri Najib Razak a chance as prime minister and it buys him a year or two.”

However, this only passes the buck back to Umno. If the party is of the opinion that Gerakan’s reliance on Umno’s hegemony was the reason for its downfall in the first place, then perhaps it can actually effect the changes demanded by the grassroots.

Some grassroots leaders have been theorising about a hypothetical and highly unlikely parallel with Umno. It involves Koh agreeing to a “transition plan” by a dissenting central working committee in the same way Umno’s supreme council ousted Abdullah earlier than he had planned.

Tulang Besi bukan Agen UMNO atau Agen Kepada Mana2 AJK PAS.

Reactions:
